It Seemed Like a Good Idea: Unveiling the Unpredictable Consequences
We've all been there – the moment when a brilliant idea sparks in our minds, filling us with enthusiasm and anticipation. In those moments, it's hard to resist the allure of pursuing our latest brainchild. However, as many of us have experienced firsthand, what seems like a good idea at first glance can quickly turn into a disastrous or unexpected outcome.
Understanding the Impulsive Nature of Ideas
Ideas are fascinating manifestations of our creativity, but they can be misleading. They often arrive unexpectedly, leaving us with a sense of urgency to act upon them. This impulsive nature often blinds us to potential flaws or negative consequences that may arise from pursuing our ideas.
Take, for example, the story of John, a young entrepreneur who had a brilliant idea for a new mobile app. Filled with excitement, he immediately invested all of his savings into bringing his idea to life. However, after months of development and promotion, the app failed to gain traction in the saturated market, leaving John financially devastated.

Unforeseen Obstacles and Challenges
Unpredictability is an inherent part of life, and the same applies to ideas. While an idea might appear foolproof on the surface, we rarely consider the potential obstacles that might come our way. These obstacles can range from technical difficulties to unforeseen market trends that render our ideas irrelevant or outdated.
In the world of technology, numerous startups have fallen victim to this phenomenon. For instance, let's take a look at a hypothetical example of a company that developed an advanced virtual reality headset. Initially hailed as a groundbreaking innovation, the company faced numerous challenges during production, resulting in delayed releases and mounting costs. By the time their product hit the market, a competitor had already introduced a more accessible and affordable alternative, ultimately rendering their idea obsolete.
Embracing the Possibility of Failure
One key aspect of pursuing ideas is the acceptance of failure. While failure is often viewed as negative, it can pave the way for invaluable lessons and growth. It's essential to understand that not all ideas will result in success, and failure should be seen as a stepping stone rather than an obstacle. By embracing the possibility of failure, we become more resilient and open to learning from our mistakes.
Take the story of Sarah, a painter who experimented with different styles and techniques throughout her artistic career. While some of her ideas resulted in beautiful masterpieces, others were met with criticism or indifference. However, instead of giving up, Sarah viewed each failure as an opportunity to refine her skills and explore new artistic avenues. Her persistence eventually paid off, as her unique style gained recognition and popularity in the art world.
Learning to Evaluate and Fine-Tune Ideas
To avoid the pitfalls of impulsive decision-making, it's crucial to develop a structured approach when evaluating ideas. This involves thoroughly analyzing the potential risks, benefits, and feasibility of our ideas before diving headfirst into their implementation.
One effective method is the SWOT analysis, which stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. By conducting this analysis, we can identify strengths and opportunities to leverage, weaknesses that require improvement, and potential threats that we need to address.
It seemed like a good idea – a phrase that many of us have uttered before realizing the complexities and challenges that lie hidden beneath. While ideas have the power to ignite our passion and drive, it's essential to approach them with a critical mindset, considering both the benefits and risks involved.
By understanding the impulsive nature of ideas, embracing the possibility of failure, and learning to evaluate and fine-tune our ideas, we can navigate the uncertain path of idea implementation more effectively. Remember, not every idea will lead to success, but with each attempt, we grow and learn, inching closer to the groundbreaking ideas that will shape our future.

With more than a decade in the media and 5+ years in ESL education, Harry Hodge's career has taken some twists and turns in locations around the world. From teaching English to S. Korean elementary students to pulling rickshaws in Canada to playing a Spanish colonel on Vietnamese TV, the term "I'll try anything once" has never been more appropriate.
"It Seemed Like A Good Idea..." marks Harry's first foray into the world of non-fiction, published by Two Franks Media. If you've ever heard anyone preface a tale of hijinx with those six words, this is the read for you.
A journalism graduate from Concordia University in Montreal, Harry has worked for publications across Canada and Asia. These include Canada's Metro Edmonton, 24 Hours Toronto, the Timmins Daily Press, the Sherbrooke Record and more. In Asia he has appeared in 21st Century (Beijing) as well as the Korea Herald and the Saigon Times. He currently writes sports for the Word Vietnam monthly and Saigoneer.com.
"When I started discussing this project with Two Franks Media in 2014, it started as a focus on odd experiences during my work or travels when it really seemed to someone (sometimes me, sometimes not) that whatever was happening was the most logical course of action. When you are in the moment, "logic" becomes fluid. If someone had told me before moving to Seoul or Ho Chi Minh City or some of these other places that all these strange things would happen, I'd laugh it off and say "you're outta your mind!"
But the truth is stranger than fiction; hence, my first foray into non-fiction publishing. I also wanted to include some of my favourite articles from more than a decade working in newspapers and magazines. I felt like it all needed to be put into a comprehensive tone, and when I had the opportunity to work with Paul Blake at Two Franks and use some artwork from my longtime friend Jacob Rolfe, the time was right. Jacob Rolfe is an illustrator and screen-printer based in Canada. His work can be seen at www.thefloatingworld.net
I hope people read this and get a chuckle, or at least an insight into another place or culture. Working and travelling showed me that the more I see of the world, the more I realize people are not all that different. We're all bonkers in our own ways!"
