Boocoo Dinky Dow: My Short Crazy Vietnam War Experience
The Vietnam War is etched in our collective memory as one of the most brutal and controversial conflicts of the 20th century. For those who experienced it firsthand, the memories are even more vivid and complex. In this article, I will share my personal account of my short and crazy Vietnam War experience, which I have titled "Boocoo Dinky Dow" - a phrase that captures the essence of the chaos and madness I witnessed.
The Significance of Boocoo Dinky Dow
The phrase "Boocoo Dinky Dow" was commonly used by American soldiers during the Vietnam War. It is derived from the French expression "beaucoup d'indicatif," which means "plenty crazy." The soldiers adopted and Americanized the phrase, using it to describe the chaotic and unpredictable nature of the war. It perfectly encapsulates the absurdity and surreal quality of the Vietnam War experience.
Arrival in the Unknown
As a young soldier fresh out of training, I found myself in Vietnam, a land far away from everything familiar. The moment I set foot on Vietnamese soil, I could feel the weight of the war pressing down on me. The humid air was thick with uncertainty, and a sense of impending danger lurked around every corner.

The first few days were a whirlwind of emotions. The constant noise of helicopters, the acrid smell of gunpowder, and the sight of wounded soldiers shocked my senses. It was surreal to witness the horrors of war unfold right before my eyes, and I knew then that my life would never be the same.
A Day in the Life
Life in Vietnam was unpredictable, to say the least. There was no such thing as a typical day. We would wake up to the sound of mortars, spend hours patrolling through dense jungles, and engage in intense firefights with enemy soldiers. The adrenaline rush was constant, and fear became our constant companion.
Living conditions were grueling. We slept in makeshift tents, endured relentless heat, and battled against disease-carrying mosquitoes. Yet, even in the midst of the harsh realities, there were moments of camaraderie and humor that helped us find strength. The bond forged between soldiers in such extreme circumstances is like no other.
Surviving the Madness
Survival in Vietnam required adaptability and resilience. One moment, we would be navigating treacherous terrains, and the next, we would find ourselves participating in humanitarian missions, offering aid to local villages. The dichotomy of our roles as both warriors and humanitarians added a layer of complexity to our experiences.
The mental toll of the war was immense. The constant fear, the loss of friends, and witnessing the destruction of lives weighed heavily on our minds. We coped in different ways - some turned to alcohol, others found solace in art or writing. For me, it was an outlet through which I could process the chaos around me.
Reflections and Lessons
As I look back on my short and crazy Vietnam War experience, I am filled with a mix of emotions. The war taught me the fragility and preciousness of life. It taught me the strength we can find within ourselves even in the darkest of times. It taught me the importance of compassion and understanding, even in the midst of seemingly senseless violence.
The legacy of the Vietnam War persists, and its impact on the soldiers who fought and the nation it tore apart cannot be overstated. The phrase "Boocoo Dinky Dow" serves as a reminder of the incredible courage and resilience displayed by countless individuals during those tumultuous years.
It is my hope that by sharing my story, a small part of the collective memory of the Vietnam War is preserved. May we never forget the sacrifices made and the lessons learned during one of the darkest chapters in our history.

Grady Myers was an artistic but aimless teenager in 1968, when, desperate for troops, the U.S. Army overlooked his extreme nearsightedness and transformed him into Hoss, an M-60 machine gunner. In "Boocoo Dinky Dow: My short, crazy Vietnam War," Myers recalls Fort Lewis, where soldiers were chased for stealing cakes and there could be a fuzzy line between training and torture. He describes the insanity of Vietnam, where an old man carrying sticks posed a moral dilemma and a young man had to weigh the burden of his virginity against the dubious pleasures of riverbank prostitutes. Myers’s explosives-happy comrades in Charlie Company sometimes posed the greatest danger. But, in a dramatic ambush, those same crazy soldiers risked their lives to save his. After the war, Myers went on to an art career. He died in 2011. Read an excerpt and more at shortcrazyvietnam.com.
