The Splendor of St Peter Square

Adjacent to St Peter Basilica lies St Peter Square, a grand piazza steeped in history and religious symbolism. Designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in the 17th century, this expansive square serves as the centerpiece of Vatican City and its Papal ceremonies. As you enter the square, your gaze will be drawn to the imposing obelisk at the center, an ancient Egyptian marvel brought to Rome during the reign of Emperor Caligula.

Surrounding the obelisk, you will find four magnificent statues representing the four major apostles: St Peter, St Paul, St Andrew, and St James. These statues stand as guardians to the entrance of the Vatican, symbolizing the unbreakable bond between the Church and its founding apostles. Take a moment to appreciate the significance of these figures and the incredible legacy they represent.

Flanking St Peter Square are two collonades, consisting of 284 columns and 88 pilasters, creating a visually stunning effect and embracing visitors as they approach the basilica. These colonnades were ingeniously designed by Bernini to provide shelter and a welcoming embrace, symbolizing the open arms of the Church, ready to receive devotees from all corners of the world.

For only 1.99$ great heritage is on your fingertips.

St. Peter’s Basilica is great and truly big monument, the most important catholic ornament on the earth.

Good thing is that there is no entrance fee to the Basilica, but entrance queues are a big headache.

The only advice from my side is to get early to the Square and be in-between the first ones to visit Basilica. If you have intention visiting the Dome, visit the Dome first. As you’ll enter to the sight turn right in front of Basilica and you will be able to buy the tickets and get to the roof and the Dome without queuing; after that visit Basilica, and the last would be the visit to Papal Tombs.

Visit to the Dome is 7,00 Euros and you cannot buy the tickets in advance. In the morning line is short and there is no need to wait more than 5 minutes. Later, during the day, waiting time climes to 30-60 minutes.
