The Forgotten Story Of Black American Soldiers Brutally Massacred In World War
In the annals of history, certain events stand as stark reminders of the sacrifices made by those who fought in World War I and II. Yet, amid the numerous stories of heroism and bravery, there is one particular chapter that has often been overlooked - the brutal massacre of Black American soldiers.
An Untold Tragedy Unveiled
World War I, often referred to as the "Great War," began in 1914 and lasted until 1918. During this time, the United States joined the allied forces in 1917. Thousands of African-American soldiers were enlisted, eager to fight for their country despite facing racial discrimination and segregationist policies.
However, their pivotal role in the war effort, and the sacrifices they made, have been largely marginalized and obscured by history. In particular, one heart-wrenching event epitomizes the horrors these soldiers faced - the Massacre at Camp Van Dorn.

The Massacre at Camp Van Dorn
Located near Centreville, Mississippi, Camp Van Dorn served as a training ground for the 364th Infantry Regiment, a unit composed entirely of Black American soldiers. The soldiers underwent rigorous training and were prepared to be deployed overseas to join the war effort.
However, tragedy struck on a fateful night in the summer of 1943 when an African-American officer, Lieutenant Joe Williams, was found murdered. What unfolded next was a harrowing tale of racism, violence, and a shocking cover-up.
Allegations quickly emerged that the murder was racially motivated, perpetrated by white soldiers who held deep-seated prejudices. Disturbing accounts of violence and abuse against Black American soldiers soon came to light, revealing an environment filled with hatred and discrimination.
Despite mounting evidence and witness testimonies, the investigation into the massacre was hastily concluded, with the white officials involved adamant in their denial of any racial motivation. The truth was systematically suppressed and buried beneath layers of secrecy.
The Legacy of the Forgotten
The tragic event at Camp Van Dorn was not an isolated incident. It reflects a broader pattern of disregard for the contributions and sufferings of Black American soldiers throughout history.
Thousands of black soldiers courageously fought on the front lines, yet their tales of valor and sacrifice went unnoticed and uncelebrated. Denied recognition for their bravery, they returned home to a country that continued to marginalize and discriminate against them.
It was not until the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s that these injustices began to be confronted. Activists fought tirelessly to shed light on the brutal treatment endured by Black American soldiers, forcing the nation to acknowledge this dark chapter in history.
Remembering the Forgotten
The sacrifices made by those who fought in World War I and II deserve to be remembered and honored, regardless of their race. The story of the Black American soldiers massacred at Camp Van Dorn serves as a stark reminder of the systemic discrimination and violence that plagued the nation even during times of war.
By bringing this forgotten story to the forefront, we honor the memory of those brave soldiers and ensure that their sacrifices are not in vain. It is a call to recognize and rectify the injustices that have been committed against Black Americans throughout history.
Let us never forget the forgotten, as their stories deserve to be heard, acknowledged, and learned from. Only through understanding and confronting our past can we hope to build a more inclusive and just future for all.

Nearly forgotten by history, this is the story of the Wereth Eleven, African-American soldiers who fought courageously for freedom in WWII—only to be ruthlessly executed by Nazi troops during the Battle of the Bulge.
Their story was almost forgotten by history. Now known as the Wereth Eleven, these brave African-American soldiers left their homes to join the Allied effort on the front lines of WWII. As members of the 333rd Field Artillery Battalion, they provided crucial fire support at the Siege of Bastogne. Among the few who managed to escape the Nazi’s devastating Ardennes Offensive, they found refuge in the small village of Wereth, Belgium. A farmer and supporter of the Allies took the exhausted and half-starved men into his home. When Nazi authorities learned of their whereabouts, they did not take the soldiers prisoner, but subjected them to torture and execution in a nearby field.
Despite their bravery and sacrifice, these eleven soldiers were omitted from the final Congressional War Crimes report of 1949. For seventy years, their files—marked secret—gathered dust in the National Archive. But in 1994, at the site of their execution, a memorial was dedicated to the Wereth Eleven and all African-American soldiers who fought in Europe.
Drawing on firsthand interviews with family members and fellow soldiers, The Lost Eleven tells the complete story of these nearly forgotten soldiers, their valor in battle and their tragic end.
