But Cambodia's history is not just about temples and beauty; it is also a tale of darkness and despair. The Killing Fields, situated just outside Phnom Penh, tell a haunting story of the country's darkest days under the Khmer Rouge regime. Between 1975 and 1979, an estimated two million Cambodians lost their lives to political executions, forced labor, and torture.

Walking through the Killing Fields, visitors are confronted with mass graves and evidence of the atrocities that took place. It is a chilling reminder of the horrors that human beings are capable of inflicting upon one another. The Memorial Stupa, filled with the skulls and bones of the victims, serves as a solemn memorial to those who perished.

It serves as a stark reminder of the atrocities committed and the resilience of the Cambodian people.

Cambodia in the Far East Asia is a land of contradictions where a few years ago foreigners never dared to set foot on. On one side nearly 2 lakhs of poor innocent natives where cruelly murdered by their own rulers, followed by one lakh or more people were killed by the carpet bombing of the US Air force. On the other side, this is a place where some of the largest temples in the world have been constructed between 8th and 12th century AD. These magnificent architectural marvels were unknown to the outside world till nineteenth century but rediscovered by the French rulers. Most of these have been renovated with funding from many foreign nations including India.
This book gives our experience in visiting Cambodia few years back. Our visit to places of interest in Phnom Penh viz. King’s palace, National Museum, Buddha Vihara all in Phnom Penh and a visit to the Killing fields, the museum built in memory of those killed in the genocide are first presented. A memorable experience of seeing the Apsara dance, traditional art of Cambodia is also presented. This is followed by our memorable experience of visiting the ancient temples of Angkor wat, Angkor Thom, Ta Prom ,Baphuon and Preah Vihar . Fifteen chapters of the book are illustrated with colour photographs of the places visited by us.
