Key Milestones and Landmarks
Throughout its history, the Grand Trunk Western Railroad witnessed several significant milestones, leaving behind a trail of iconic landmarks. One such landmark is the GTW's distinctive "Prairie Style" architecture depot buildings, designed by the renowned architectural firm of Spier and Rohns. These buildings showcased unique design elements and reinforced the GTW's identity in the communities it served.
Another notable achievement of the GTW was its expansion into Canada. Through strategic acquisitions, such as the Grand Trunk Railway of Canada, the GTW extended its reach farther and solidified its position as a major transnational railway. This monumental development increased the GTW's influence and emphasized its role in connecting people, towns, and industries on both sides of the border.
Furthermore, the GTW actively participated in World War II efforts by transporting troops and military supplies. Its dedication to assisting the war effort played a significant role in the success of military operations. This contribution remains a part of the GTW's legacy, cementing its position as a vital transportation entity during critical times of national importance.

For passionate rail enthusiasts, the Grand Trunk Western Railroad offers a captivating railfan experience. Discovering hidden gems, forgotten tracks, and picturesque routes is a thrill that only a true railfan can understand. The GTW's extensive rail network provides ample opportunities for enthusiasts to chase trains, photograph magnificent locomotives, and immerse themselves in the rich history of rail travel.

The Railfan Chronicles is a series of books about different railroads during the period from 1975 to 2000. This was a period of great change in the railroad industry, with mergers of large railroads and creation of regional and short line railroads to operate unwanted lines of the Class One railroads. These books will cover this period in photographs taken by the author.
The first railroad being covered is Grand Trunk Western Railroad. This is Book 4 of our coverage of this unique Michigan railroad, looking at its Holly Subdivision between the years 1975 and 2000.
Book 4 covers the mainline action on GTW's in the Holly Subdivision starting in 1975 when GTW was still an independent railroad, after its merger with the Detroit & Toledo Shore Line Railroad and the Detroit, Toledo and Ironton Railroad in the early 1980's, through when GTW itself was being absorbed by its parent, Canadian National Railways, starting in 1992.
