Once upon a time, in the late 19th century, a talented artist emerged and forever altered the landscape of art. Aubrey Beardsley, the embodiment of the Aesthetic movement, captivated audiences with his enigmatic and seductive illustrations. In this article, we will dive deep into Beardsley's mesmerizing works, examining their macabre sensibility, their influence on art and society, and the controversial life of the artist himself.

The Early Years: Unleashing the Imagination

Aubrey Vincent Beardsley was born on August 21, 1872, in Brighton, England. As a child, he displayed an incredible talent for drawing, often spending hours sketching intricate details in his notebook. It was clear from an early age that Aubrey was destined for greatness in the art world.

At the tender age of 17, Beardsley's artistic abilities caught the attention of Sir Edward Burne-Jones, a prominent Pre-Raphaelite artist. Burne-Jones became a mentor and guided Beardsley's development, introducing him to the world of art and exposing him to various artistic movements.

The Rise of the Aesthetic Movement

The late 19th century was a time of great change and social upheaval. The Aesthetic movement emerged as a response to the industrialization and rigid conservatism of the Victorian era. It celebrated beauty and art for art's sake, prioritizing aesthetic pleasure over moral or political messages.

Beardsley quickly became the poster child for the Aesthetic movement, with his distinct style and provocative subject matter. His illustrations, characterized by intricate lines, delicate curves, and a strong emphasis on the human figure, challenged societal norms and pushed the boundaries of acceptability.

Macabre Sensibility: Exploring the Dark Side

One cannot discuss the art of Aubrey Beardsley without delving into its macabre sensibility. His works often depicted themes of decay, death, and sensual temptation, creating a delicate balance between beauty and grotesque. Beardsley's fascination with the morbid and Gothic is evident in his most famous illustrations.

One notable example is his ambitious work, "Salome." This series of illustrations, inspired by Oscar Wilde's play, captures the seductive and destructive power of a femme fatale. Beardsley's intricate lines and attention to detail enhance the sensuality and darkness of the narrative, drawing the viewer into a world of forbidden desires.

A Legacy of Influence

Beardsley's art, though short-lived, left an indelible mark on the art world. His unique style influenced countless artists and movements, including the Art Nouveau and Symbolism movements. His intricate lines and fascination with the macabre can be seen in the works of Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele.

Despite his early death at the age of 25, Beardsley's legacy lives on, inspiring artists to challenge societal norms and explore the taboo. His art continues to captivate audiences with its enigmatic allure, inviting viewers to question their preconceived notions and embrace the darker side of human existence.

The Controversial Life of Aubrey Beardsley

While Beardsley's art might have shocked and intrigued, his personal life was equally as controversial. He was known for pushing societal boundaries not only through his art but also through his own choices and beliefs.

Beardsley's fascination with the taboo extended beyond his illustrations. He embraced his own sexuality and engaged in a lifestyle that challenged Victorian ideals. His openness about his bisexuality and exploration of eroticism shocked the conservative society of his time, often leading to public outrage and condemnation.

Aubrey Beardsley was undeniably a groundbreaking artist, unafraid to explore the darker side of humanity and challenge societal norms. His intricate drawings continue to captivate audiences to this day, invoking a mixture of fascination, seduction, and contemplation. Beardsley's legacy lives on, reminding us of the power of art to reshape our world and provoke emotions that lie just beneath the surface.

The Artist

Aubrey Vincent Beardsley (1872-1898),prolific English Fin-de-siècle artist & author. Despite his tragically young death at the age of 25 from tuberculosis, Beardsley created an enormous body of work which has come to symbolise the decadence of the 1890’s. Heavily influenced by the Japanese Ukiyo-e genre of woodblock prints from the 17th & 18th century. His art is one of dichotomy, delicate & bold in execution & subject. He combined the decadence, grotesque & erotic of his age, wove & bound them together with intricate patterns, bold graphical lines & pushed against the confines of Victorian society.

Despite his short career & quiet ambition of becoming a writer, Beardsley made a substantial & lasting contribution to the development of the Art Nouveau, Poster & Aesthetic movements. Over a century after his death it's hard to imagine the legacy of this young artist being any greater than the already indelible mark he left behind with the stroke of his pen. Some might not be directly familiar with his work but his influence and reach today is such that you won't need to venture far to discover the impact of his work across modern culture from Fashion, Film, Television, Art & Music.

The Author

Symons grew up in the West of England and embarked on a literary career from a young age. He was one of the principal exponents of Symbolism in Britain & during the fin de siècle he built an impressive intellectual and social network that comprised the most prominent figures of the age; including Aubrey Beardsley, Mathilde Blind, Edmund Gosse, Havelock Ellis, Michael Field, Herbert Horne and Walter Pater. Through his translations and critical appreciations, he helped introduce an entire generation of European writers and artists to the English-speaking world.

New Digital Edition - Revised & Expanded

In this superbly illustrated book, Aubrey Beardsley's iconic black & white ink drawings bring the risqué elegance of the Art Nouveau to the Kindle screen. His high-contrast illustrations are a perfect match for e-ink screens without any compromise. In this revised & expanded edition, author Arthur Symons explores the life & work of the artist, offering insight into Beardsley from the perspective of a close friend & colleague. Some of the original print edition's illustration plates were cropped & reduced; this has been corrected to better reflect the unique designs & intent of the artist. The number of illustrations included also has been expanded upon with over 40 new pieces of the artist's work, giving the reader a broader overview of his output across different media & bringing the total number of illustrations included in this new edition to over a hundred individual pieces.
