Doon, a 17 year old mutant, is huddled in an alley dying of a virus. To complicate matters, she’s also being stalked by Ferals. As they move in to rob her, Sleep, 11 year old master pickpocket, ex-member of the notorious Mother Joy gang, and all around pain in the butt, rescues her. As the ferals spaz out on the alley floor, she hauls Doon to a bench where they size each other up.
They cut a deal and Sleep drags her to a RoboDoc, where she tells them she’s Doon’s sister. After Doon recovers in a City Services healing hive, they’re living in a City Service’s hut where they’re visited by a tele-operated robot. The robot’s operator is Adama, manager of The Park of the Ascension and Doon’s ex-boss. He offers them a job, but being the jerk that he is, makes them scale a sixty story climbing wall to get to his apartment. While climbing, Sleep creates a disturbance by kicking people off the wall, and in Adama’s apartment she gets in an altercation with Miss Em, his girlfriend.
Because they’re stony broke they take the job, which is to find the park’s synthespian, an artificial intelligence that’s gone missing.
They skate into the derelicts to a cooperative run by Doon’s friend, Buttons, to retrieve her Trik, a pedal powered vehicle with a passenger compartment. While there, Sleep causes a commotion and later engages Buttons in an epic chess match. As they leave the derelicts, they’re confronted by Annika, a predatory cyborg, and her bodyguards. They fight with the bodyguards, talk to her, and discover she’s a big deal at the corporation that developed the synthespian and . . . she wants it back!
They enlist the help of Sleep’s cynical friend, Ferret, a primo hacker.
When not bickering, they follow clues that eventually leads them to the Citadel, a mysterious building occupied by a fanatical group of monks who worship AI. It becomes obvious that if they want the synthespian, they’ll have to go into the Citadel and get her, which is a seriously risky thing to do.
It doesn’t go according to plan.
