Mr. Saunders' Machine:
He taps at the keyboard and moves the roller up and down. The carriage clatters back and forth across the page. I reach out to touch the paper as it emerges from the machine. Vincent's clutching hands, reaching out to me across an endless expanse of water, swim up at me from the page.
The wind howls through my poem as I stand alone on the island beach.
Mr. Saunders watches me. I read the poem aloud, and then again into the wind. The ghosts of demon-children in my poem reach out to me from within the water.
"What fuels this machine? What does it run on?" I ask.
"Do you like it?" says Mr. Saunders.
"No," I say, "I don't like it at all."
Mr. Saunders presses a button on his machine and a spool of paper twists into the carriage. A fresh page feeds into the roller. I take the paper out of his poetry-machine and read it out loud:
"I am a machine. I am made of wire and wood. Leads carry electrical fluid into my brain. Electricity paints pictures on my steel heart. The music sets the world on fire."
"How does such a machine produce poetry?" I ask Mr. Saunders.
A demon rumbles into my poem, gripping the handlebars of a tricycle. His eyes are hidden behind a red mask. He's selling pictures of dead babies for five cents each.
Mr. Saunders coughs nervously and says, "I'd rather not answer that question."
