Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, is a name that resonates with strength, courage, and profound leadership. But behind every great man, there is a great mother, and in the case of Lincoln, it was Nancy Hanks Lincoln. Today, we delve into the heartwarming story of Nancy and her daughter, Sarah, often called Sally.

The Early Years

Born on February 5, 1784, Nancy Hanks would grow up to become one of the most influential women in American history. She was raised in Kentucky in a humble log cabin, where she developed a strong work ethic and unwavering determination. Despite growing up in poverty, Nancy's mother instilled in her the value of education and encouraged her to dream big.

As a young woman, Nancy met Thomas Lincoln, a carpenter, and farmer. The couple fell in love and tied the knot on June 12, 1806. Nancy's spirited personality and Thomas' steady nature complemented each other, making them a perfect match.

Family Life and Tragedy

Nancy and Thomas started their family, and in 1807, their first child was born, Sarah Lincoln. At the tender age of nine, Sarah tragically died due to unknown causes. The loss of her daughter deeply affected Nancy, but she found solace in her strong faith and unwavering resilience.

In 1809, Nancy gave birth to her second child, a son named Abraham. From an early age, Nancy encouraged Abraham's love for reading and learning, often sharing her own passion for education. Despite their meager resources, Nancy made sure her children had access to books and supported their academic pursuits.

Motherly Influence

Nancy's influence on Abraham's character cannot be overstated. Her strong moral compass and unwavering support shaped his values and beliefs. Abraham shared a deep bond with his mother and often credited her for his success.

In 1818, tragedy struck again when Nancy's health began to deteriorate rapidly. She was diagnosed with milk sickness, a disease caused by the consumption of milk from cows that consumed white snakeroot plants. On October 5, 1818, Nancy Hanks Lincoln passed away at the age of 34, leaving behind a grieving family and a remarkable legacy.

A Lasting Legacy

Nancy's memory lived on through her son, Abraham, who would go on to become one of the most significant figures in American history. He described his mother as "a loving, gentle mother" and often recalled her inspiring words on the value of equality and justice.

Abraham Lincoln once said, "All that I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel mother." In his speeches and writings, he frequently conveyed his admiration for Nancy and her everlasting impact on his life.

Today, the story of Nancy Hanks Lincoln is a reminder of the crucial role mothers play in shaping the lives and destinies of their children. Her resilience, love, and unwavering belief in education left an indelible mark on the 16th President of the United States, who went on to lead the nation through one of its most challenging times.

The story of Nancy and Sally Lincoln is one of strength, love, and sacrifice. Their lives serve as a testament to the enduring power of a mother's influence. Nancy's unwavering commitment to education and her nurturing nature laid the foundation for Abraham's success.

An excellently researched historical novel about Abraham Lincoln's family and formative years with particular emphasis on his mother, Nancy, and stepmother, Sally.

“All that I am,” said Lincoln, “I owe to my angel mother.”
“Which mother?” he was once asked.
“Both,” he replied.

This is a story crafted in such a life-like manner that it allows the reader to be intricately drawn into Lincoln’s family situations, to see and hear everything that occured in the little cabins that the Lincolns called home.

Nancy Hanks fell in love with Tom Lincoln at an early age and, after their marriage, followed him uncomplainingly from one farm to another and from state to state. After Abraham (Abe) was born, Nancy encouraged his interest in book learning recognizing early on that Abe was destined to be more than just a farmer. But the many moves and primitive life of the frontier took its toll and Nancy died when Abe was just nine-years-old.

A year later after Sally’s death, Tom Lincoln married Sally Bush. Though Sally was unable to read or write, with great pride and determination, she helped her stepson live up to his true potential: the presidency of the United States.
