The cyborg Annika has turned to Doon, a seventeen year old mutant with raptor eyes, and Sleep, a ten year old master pickpocket and all around pain in the butt, for help. Once before they ignored her orders and did things their way, thus antagonizing her. So when she shows up at their hut on the beach, they’re suspicious. But this time it’s personnel. Annika’s adopted daughter, Zoe, has run away and she has no clue where she went or why. She asks them to look for her, and being broke and reduced to living on City Services ‘Soy Stuff,’ they agree.

They start at the Drift, have an encounter with a couple of ferals, which leads them to the derelicts where they find out someone else, someone dangerous, is looking for her. They find her hiding in a deserted house in the derelicts and learn that she is determined to find out why her parents 'Threw her away.'

They take her to their 'luxurious beach house,' two epoxy coated cardboard shipping crates, contact Annika, and arrange a trip to the City of the Dead for Zoe and Annika. They arrive, find the bones of Zoe's parents in their apartment, discover the reason they put her in an orphanage They are preparing to leave when drones carrying armed men show up with the intention of killing them.
