Yet another exciting event in February is the peak of the Alpha Centaurids meteor shower. These shooting stars are known for their blue and white trails, making a stunning spectacle for all.
March
Mars and the Pleiades star cluster, also known as the Seven Sisters, will share the stage in March. On the 3rd of March, look eastwards after sunset to observe this celestial alignment which will create a captivating scene.
March also presents an opportunity to witness the Super Worm Moon. The Worm Moon, also known as the Crow Moon, marks the arrival of spring and the emergence of earthworms from the thawing soils.
April
Astronomy enthusiasts will be eagerly waiting for the Lyrids meteor shower in April. This annual event showcases an average of 15 meteors per hour and can be seen from both hemispheres of the Earth.
In addition, a mesmerizing conjunction of the Moon and Jupiter is set to occur on April 28th. Don't miss the chance to witness these celestial giants sharing the night sky.
May
The Eta Aquarids meteor shower will grace our skies in May. This phenomenon is known for its fast and bright meteors, originating from the debris of Halley's Comet. Wake up early on the morning of May 5th for the best viewing experience.
May also brings an annular solar eclipse, also referred to as the "Ring of Fire" eclipse. This cosmic event occurs when the Moon is slightly farther away from the Earth, resulting in a ring-like appearance around the Sun.
June
In June, skywatchers will be excited to witness a rare celestial phenomenon: a total solar eclipse. Be prepared for a truly breathtaking experience on June 10th, as the Moon completely covers the Sun, casting a temporary shadow on Earth.
Furthermore, on June 21st, the Summer Solstice will mark the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere while the Southern Hemisphere will celebrate the Winter Solstice, marking the shortest day of the year.
July
Dubbed the "Meteor Month," July treats us to various meteor showers. The most notable ones are the Delta Aquarids and the Perseids meteor showers. These shows promise a spectacular display of shooting stars.
July also offers a partial lunar eclipse, where only a portion of the Moon is obscured by the Earth's shadow. Keep an eye on the night sky on July 16th to observe this engrossing event.
August
Astronomy enthusiasts are in for a treat in August with the annual stargazing extravaganza, the Perseids meteor shower. Known for its high number of meteors, sometimes reaching up to 100 per hour, the Perseids are a favorite among stargazers.
Additionally, we have a special event, a conjunction of Venus and Mars, on August 19th. Don't miss this opportunity to witness these two dazzling planets align in the night sky.
September
A rare celestial event awaits us in September, the occurrence of a Full Moon on the same day as the Autumn Equinox. This phenomenon hasn't happened since 1991 and won't occur again until 2051, making it a must-see event.
September also marks the peak viewing time for the Aurigid meteor shower, known for its bright fireballs that illuminate the night sky in extraordinary fashion.
October
Mark your calendars on October 8th for a beautiful conjunction of the Moon, Saturn, and Jupiter. This celestial alignment will create a stunning visual display for sky gazers.
October is also the month of the Orionids meteor shower, originating from Halley's Comet. Expect around 20 meteors per hour during the peak, providing a thrilling experience for astronomers.
November
A mind-blowing occasion awaits us in November, a partial lunar eclipse combined with the Taurids meteor shower. This rare cosmic event will offer an incredible celestial spectacle for those lucky enough to witness it.
November also brings the Leonids meteor shower, known for its bright and swift meteors that originate from the debris of Comet Tempel-Tuttle.
December
Capping off the astronomical year, December introduces us to the Geminids meteor shower, considered one of the most spectacular meteor showers of the year. With the potential to see over 100 meteors per hour, this event is not to be missed.
The year also concludes with a special event: the Great Conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn. On December 21st, these two gas giants will come closest to each other, offering an awe-inspiring celestial sight to end the year.
2022 promises a plethora of astronomical events to captivate our imagination and inspire a sense of wonder. From meteor showers and planetary conjunctions to lunar and solar eclipses, each month offers its own unique celestial spectacle.
Mark your calendars, gather your telescopes, and prepare to embrace the beauty of the cosmos. Keep looking up, and let the wonders of the universe unfold before your eyes in 2022!
