This book can honestly be described as unique. It will appeal to all ages and would make an excellent present. Maria is now a hospital cleaner, a modern woman with a mobile phone and a car. But in her lifetime she has lived through several centuries of change. She tells in her own words of the years between 1960-80, when she was growing up in Madeira and for a while in colonial Mozambique. Her society had hardly changed since the first settlers arrived in 1420. Because most people were illiterate, all knowledge was passed on by word of mouth in an unbroken chain dating back to Neolithic times. This is rapidly vanishing, so this is a chance to share in that knowledge before it is lost forever. Her village was in the remotest part of the island and had no gas, electricity or running water – not even a proper road. As she says “They didn’t have ox carts, but a sort of sledge”. Maria tells in frank unsentimental language of the hard work on the land, and of the poverty, where nothing was ever wasted. Her school was like something described by Dickens, and there was not much time for play. But everyone made the most of the feast days. We hear about spirits who walk the night. And she tells of strange remedies for illness -which modern science has now shown to have a sound basis. Above all there is a deep sense of community, and most important, of the deep bonds of the family.Andy Bungay, reviewing on Riverside Radio, London said: “Her world is vividly brought to life in very simple, direct, tell-it-like-it-is prose. Her story would make a pretty extraordinary art house movie.”
